Relaxation Hypnosis Archives

Relaxation hypnosis, as the name implies, is used to induce greater relaxation in a person in a permanent or semi-permanent way. Hypnosis by its nature puts a person into a far more relaxed state of mind, so relaxation hypnosis is ideally suited to help a person become more relaxed.

People today are, in general, suffering from too much stress. Some stress is normal and even healthy, and productive, and there are of course those people who thrive “under pressure”. But too many people are too often totally stressed out. One reason that we are so chronically stressed out as a society is that we are a society of shallow breathers. We don’t practice diaphragmatic breathing unless we are specially trained such as vocalists, distance runners, and so on (even though this shallow breathing is actually the learned behavior). We thus cause great tension in our bodies, in our neck and shoulders, that we have no need for and which wears us out, giving us less energy to handle our lives and, therefore, creating great stress in ourselves. However, many people find it very hard to let go of their bad shallow breathing habit. Hypnosis is sometimes used to help these people breathe better and therefore reduce their stress.

But there are other reasons for being stressed out. We live in a society where it’s easy to have information overload. When we feel that our minds just cannot cope with all of the data that are streaming into us for our jobs or, nowadays, our personal lives, or about the economy, or about world events, we naturally “press”. We stress ourselves to try to think more (such as by ingesting more caffeine), take down notes faster, read more, find more information, make more time for work, etc. But this kind of mental pressure often comes with terrible consequences after a while. We might feel afraid of what we learn, since we are now so surrounded by greater amounts of mis-information as well as data. We can feel inadequate from taking on too much. Our high levels of stress can also lead to negative health consequences: insomnia; constant headaches; irritability; being quick to anger; loss of focus or concentration; high blood pressure; heart-stress; muscle tension; and many other things.

Hypnosis or hypnotherapy for relaxation works by contacting the subconscious mind and re-programming it with new perspectives and attitudes, or new reactions and habits. Besides programming our bodily habits to breathe better, we might use relaxation hypnosis to remove mental blocks that we have toward doing healthy things to reduce our stress, such as going running several times a week or learning to play a musical instrument. Relaxation hypnosis is also used to put more positive, more joyful thoughts in our stream of consciousness, or even more self-confident thoughts, all of which play a role in helping us relax more.

When you think about hypnosis you might instantly think of the kind of hypnosis that puts people into a trance and makes them relax, then think again, there’s a new kid on the block and he’s called conversational hypnosis. This is a form of hypnosis that has been mastered by Igor Ledochowski who learnt this form of hypnosis from a rebel psychiatrist called Milton Erickson.

I first found out about this type of hypnosis when I was looking into relaxation hypnosis as a way to combat my stress levels from not being able to keep up at work. I was fed up of being ignored in meetings and laughed at when I suggested any new working methods. The final straw came when I later discussed a new technique I had thought of with colleague and they claimed it as their own and they got a pay rise!

I was so angry it was unbelievable. I couldn’t sit around and let this kind of thing happen to me again and again and not do anything about it. I wanted to find a way to make people listen to me and take me seriously for a change. By chance I got talking to a woman at a party who seemed to be the centre of attention, people were hanging on her every word, getting her drinks and giving up their seats for her. I asked her how she managed to do that and she told me she used a set of CDs called The Power of Conversational Hypnosis. She then told me that relaxation hypnosis might relax me but it wouldn’t solve my people problems. I got the CDs and eagerly listened to them. Now I understand the techniques that the rebel psychiatrist masterminded and I use them daily and get what I want in conversations.
