Is Adhd Treatable? -Ugly Lies And Rumors

‘Is ADHD treatable?’ is one of the first questions parents ask when given the diagnosis for their child. The answer is that while ADHD symptoms can be managed and treated to a certain extent, there is actually no cure. Some children grow out of it while others continue into adulthood.

In asking ‘is ADHD treatable’, many parents do not realize that there is a strong chance that their children may also have co-morbid condition such as depression, anxiety or a conduct disorder. Estimates put this possibility at 50%.

One of the lies which persists about ‘is ADHD treatable’ is the assumption that the powerful mind altering drugs are the answer and the only answer. This is misleading to say the least. While the psychostimulants which are mostly amphetamines can and do often relieve symptoms of hyperactivity and inattention, they certainly do not cure this condition. They can be only one part of thejigsaw

To complicate matters, there are a lot of question marks about their safety too. So much so, that the FDA has had to put a black box warning on these medications. Concern has been raised by sudden deaths ( very few, actually), heart attacks and an increase in suicidal thoughts and depression. This was sufficient evidence to force Health Canada to ban Adderall for use with ADHD children.

It is strange but sadly true that other alternative ADHD remedies hardly get a look in. Let us take behavior modification, for example. A University of Buffalo study by William Pelham and Gregory Fabiano shows that this is the most effective treatment and can easily be combined with some medication. Yes, behavior modification is only considered as a later option when the question ‘can ADHD be treated’ is asked. It should be the very first one as no medication will resolve parenting issues, especially in the case of ADHD.

There is a rumor which still persists in many circles that ADHD is due to just bad parenting. This is completely false but it must be said that successful parenting through behavior modification is actually one of the ways to manage ADHD.

There are new interesting areas of study which are neither lies nor rumors. One of these is neurofeedback. The ADHD child has to play a type of computer game and his ability to use his concentration will determine whether he can play the game successfully or not. The child gets immediate feedback and can see when his brainwaves are actually helping him to play the game. This is a sort of brain training but results have shown that the levels of concentration improve and that other ADHD symptoms diminish.

how does biofeedback works in general?

when we record our GSR

Biofeedback is a treatment technique in which people are trained to improve their health by using signals from their own bodies. Physical therapists use biofeedback to help stroke victims regain movement in paralyzed muscles. Psychologists use it to help tense and anxious clients learn to relax. Specialists in many different fields use biofeedback to help their patients cope with pain.

Chances are you have used biofeedback yourself. You’ve used it if you have ever taken your temperature or stepped on a scale. The thermometer tells you whether you’re running a fever, the scale whether you’ve gained weight. Both devices “feed back” information about your body’s condition. Armed with this information, you can take steps you’ve learned to improve the condition. When you’re running a fever, you go to bed and drink plenty of fluids. When you’ve gained weight, you resolve to eat less and sometimes you do.

Clinicians reply on complicated biofeedback machines in somewhat the same way that you rely on your scale or thermometer. Their machines can detect a person’s internal bodily functions with far greater sensitivity and precision than a person can alone. This information may be valuable. Both patients and therapists use it to gauge and direct the progress of treatment.

For patients, the biofeedback machine acts as a kind of sixth sense which allows them to “see” or “hear” activity inside their bodies. One commonly used type of machine, for example, picks up electrical signals in the muscles. It translates these signals into a form that patients can detect: It triggers a flashing light bulb, perhaps, or activates a beeper every time muscles grow more tense. If patients want to relax tense muscles, they try to slow down the flashing or beeping.

Like a pitcher learning to throw a ball across a home plate, the biofeedback trainee, in an attempt to improve a skill, monitors the performance. When a pitch is off the mark, the ballplayer adjusts the delivery so that he performs better the next time he tries. When the light flashes or the beeper beeps too often, the biofeedback trainee makes internal adjustments which alter the signals. The biofeedback therapist acts as a coach, standing at the sidelines setting goals and limits on what to expect and giving hints on how to improve performance.

Isochronic Vs Binaural

Isochronic vs Binaural – Which Brainwave Entrainment Beat/Tone is Better For Stress & Anxiety Release?

Isochronic tones are more powerful as they are engineered as a single tone and don’t require a headphone to experience altered states of consciousness.

Binaural beats require a headphone as each beat is played differently to each ear. The combined effect creates a holosync-like environment which leads to enhanced mental clarity, creativity and stress release.
