Playing With Your Mind

“You sit down comfortably, don the electrical headgear, flip a switch, close
your eyes and sink into a state of what seems like deep relaxation. A half
hour later, as you turn off the machine, you feel extremely alert and lucid.

Your brain is now functioning more effectively than it was before. Your
memory, both your ability to memorize new information and to recall
information you have already learned, has increased dramatically. Your
ability to think creatively, to solve problems, has expanded. The speed with
which your brain cells pass messages among themselves has increased. In fact,
many of your brain cells have actually grown a microscopic examination would
show that the brain cells have developed more dendrites, the branching
filaments that carry messages from one cell to another, and more synapses,
the junctures between the brain cells across which impulses are transmitted.
You are more intelligent than you were a half hour before. Such devices now
exist and are being used by increasing numbers of people.”

So begins Michael Hutchison’s book Megabrain.

Startling New Brain Research

Scientists have learned more about the brain in the last decade than in all
previous history, and the implications of the latest research are clear: the
human brain is far more powerful, with the potential for immensely greater
intelligence and change than was ever before imagined. Many scientists
believe the brain that tiny 3 1/2 pounds of neural jelly composed of 100
billion or so neurons, each single neuron an information specialist of
unimaginable efficiency, conceivably capable of carrying on several million
conversations at the same time is our last frontier, the most mysterious and
complex structure in the universe.

Some of the recent discoveries have totally debunked long held scientific ‘
truths’ such as the belief that the physical brain size is determined by
heredity. It now is shown that ‘external stimulation’ and ‘enriched
environment’ can cause an increase in brain size, including the size of
neurons, and the number of certain brain cells. This also dismisses the myth
that the brain cells we have developed by age two must last us our entire
lives, and that with each alcoholic drink and advancing old age, we are
slaying legions of brain cells that are unable to regenerate themselves.

It is now known that there does not have to be an unavoidable loss of brain
cells or effective brain functioning; for again, with the proper stimulation,
quite the opposite is true. The most far reaching in its implications is this
technology’s debunking of the previously held scientific assumption that the
brain’s operations were much like the nervous system (beyond conscious
control), and that every imaginable mental state was the result of a specific
pattern of electrical and chemical activity. We now know that we can
definitely ‘learn’ to produce the various brainwave states completely at will
and change them. In effect, you can alter and control your own mind. The
implications are almost beyond belief! You can trigger such specific brain
states as happiness, problemsolving, sexual excitement, memory recall,
heightened creativity, physical or emotional healing, athletic excellence, or
whatever. You can also learn to produce certain brainwave states in order to
alter such “involuntary” mechanisms as blood pressure, hormonal secretions,
heart rate, immune system, etc.

Owner’s Manual for Your Mind

How? One way is to learn to meditate like a Zen monk, but that may take
twenty years. Another option, says one playful ad for a new generation of
high-tech brainwave toys, will have you controlling your mind like a Zen monk
in 20 minutes. These new brain machines ‘entrain’ your brainwave activity, to
be precise, to follow the computer generated frequencies, and enable you to
create desired brainwave states at will.

Brainwaves are the electrical wave patterns generated in every person’s brain.
They vary according to a level of consciousness, and various mental activity,
and are characterized by four distinct types of brainwaves: “Academic” Beta
Brainwaves, “Creative” Alpha Brainwaves, “Hypnagogic” Theta Brainwaves, and “
Deep Sleep” Delta Brainwaves. Each brainwave state can be altered and
directed by external stimuli, including sound, light, electromagnetic fields
and physical movements. New home minicomputer brainwave entraining machines,
some Walkman size, with goggles and headphones can direct stimuli and
reliably trigger the natural brainwave states that will enable you to achieve
whatever is your desired outcome. You choose…best body? bridge game? bust
size? Glowing reports that recently made the cover of Forbes FYI magazine
called the experiences “Brain Cocktails,” while other newspaper articles
around the country have referred to them as “brain gain” “mind massage,” or “
a brain spa.”

Psychology Today magazine said, “…the evolution of human consciousness is
in for quite a jolt, thanks to …brain machine technology.”

Brain Toys and Hypnotherapy

One of the most exciting applications of the light/sound (L/S) brain training
device, says early biofeedback pioneer Dr. Thomas Budzynski, is that it is a
perfect entry vehicle to inner space. While the lights and sounds gently
guide your mind into certain specific states of consciousness, positive
verbal self change information is ferried admirably past the critical
defenses. It takes all the guesswork out of traditional hypnosis and
selfhypnosis. In fact, clinical studies show a 300% to 400% increase in the
effectiveness of any self improvement tape when used with this technology.

All over the world, clinics, universities, therapists, sports trainers, and
human potential devotees are coming out with some amazing studies and
anecdotal evidence that these brainwave-guiding toys hold the promise of
dramatically improving our life. It seems to show, at long last, that we may
finally be discovering the “access commands” that will enable us to tap into
the vast latent potential of body/mind “Mission Control.”

Adventures Into Excellence

Executives and professionals noted in the Forbes article find that using
these L/S (light/sound) brainwave devices is enormously helpful for reducing
stress and health risks, and promoting clearer, more creative thinking.
Pacific Gas and Electric in San Francisco makes L/S machines available to
their employees during lunch breaks. Employees say they love it because it is
so enjoyable and relaxing, and acts like a brain tune-up.

Progressive schools are currently using L/S to accelerate learning. In one
example of super-learning, students were able to learn thousands of words a
day, versus the 80 to 100 words per day resulting from conventional learning
approaches. California State University is also showing dramatic improvement
in those with learning disabilities.

Brain machine users are also turning in outstanding physical performances as
well as mental ones: like the world class surfing of Brad Griach Lucavia and
the Olympic bronze medal marathon winner from New Zealand, who both use the
Mind Gear PR (Personal Relaxer) brainwave entrainment device in their
training programs. Similar exciting body/mindtraining is occurring in Dr.
Bill Harrison’s work with racing car teams, and in Dr. Robert Grant’s work
with golf professionals.

Personal excellence is also extending itself into the creative performing art
of Patrick Swayze, Demi Moore, Burt Reynolds, Connie Selecca, and others, who
now use home brain training computers. Quincy Jones likes them so much he
gives Mind Gear minicomputers as gifts to everyone he knows. Mick Rock, rock
musician photographer, calls the brain machine experience “a slice of
euphoria,” and uses one regularly to “pop out of stress and moods.”

Robert Anton Wilson, author of Quantum Psychology, a thoroughbred on the “
think outside the dots” track, is convinced that we are holding the keys to
evolution in altering our brainwaves and thereby our body/mind states.
Speaking from personal experience with brain machines, he and other human
potential authors, like Michael Hutchison, are drawing a clear map of our
inner landscape, complete with brainwave milepost signs. Hutchison’s upcoming
sequel to Megabrain promises to be a lively tour guide. We can now pick our
own brainwave mileposts for whatever inner destination we wish to experience
simply by selecting the brainwave frequencies that the brain machine will
generate. A few of the numerous possibilities are: 18 Hz to improve
hyperactive behavior, 11 Hz to achieve “relaxed yet alert states,” 10Hz for
learning a foreign language fast, 10.5 Hz for specifically lowering blood
pressure; 7.83 Hz (the earth resonance frequency) leaves you feeling
revitalized like you’ve spent a day in the country; 3 to 6 Hz for eliciting
unconscious childhood memories. 1.05 Hz for growth hormone production where
intriguing reports of gray hair returning to its original color have been
noted.

Once we have selected which brainwaves we wish to visit, for whatever purpose,
the corresponding dazzling lights entrance, and the bubble sounds enthrall,
and the brain delightedly falls into step with the computergenerated
frequencies. We are on our way to our destination.

Microchip Meets Mind Power

My own MindGear and Zen Master mind machines have taken me to many unimagined
inner universes, and some utterly magical mind kingdoms. I have been
astounded at my rapid healing after a recent car accident, using a program in
low theta frequencies called “Meditation Medicine”. I’ve been confounded at
having 27 totally original thoughts pertaining to a creative project I’ve
been working on, immediately following a twenty minute multilevel program
called, amusingly enough, “Fire of the Mind.” I’ve also been fascinated and
awed, time after time, at the life changing inner space adventures of my
clients: a Playboy bunny who increased her bust size two inches, an Olympic
athlete who halved her lap time in her swimming cross training routine, a
golf pro who now is a consistent top tournament winner, a foreign woman who
passed a vitally important exam in English (a language she hardly knew), and
a top producing stockbroker who busted his cocaine and valium addition. And
there seem to be no shortage of small miracles: like the musician who
recalled where he lost his favorite guitar, or the mother who found new
patience with her preschoolers, or the student who confidently remembered
every line of her Christmas play.

As an ancient Chinese blessing says, “May we live in interesting times.” We
have never lived in a more interesting time. We are living in an age where
the apparent limits of the human brain, in reality, are only the limits of
uses to which we apply it – and the limits of what we believe possible.

How Does Giving Thanks Affect The Brain?

Thanksgiving is a time to remember to be grateful for all that we have and for the entire year of good things we’ve reaped. In light of the many trials and tribulations this year has had for many of us, we may find ourselves wondering what there is to be grateful for?  However, I can assure you there is always something to give thanks for, like for your brain and the ability to even read this article!

Gratitude can be used as a tool to move into a more positive state of mind and an overall better state of brain health. Scientist have found that kind, grateful thoughts and words cause chemical changes in the brain that work much like antidepressants bringing on a sense of peace and calmness that would rival the best pharmaceuticals, but best of all, its free!

In the face of adversity, the key is to start being grateful for those little things, be it the shoes on your feet or for someone’s kind words.  To begin, realizing and recognizing one’s state of mind and the emotional setting one is in is critical.  This level of awareness is necessary so you can take note and encounter your feelings and then begin to identify and change the thoughts that brought you to that emotional state in the first place.

So, when I notice my shoulder’s tightening up and I’m snapping at my co-workers or family it’s a clear sign that I’m not in the emotional place I want to be.  Taking note and acknowledging how I’m feeling is the segue for self-reflection and noticing what thoughts brought me to the frustration I may be feeling and being okay with it.

Then I can easily and safely transition into a different state of mind and emotional space by adjusting my thoughts from the worry of some future event to the small things I’m grateful that I failed to notice because I was too busy pumping toxic thoughts through mind.  No wonder I felt stressed!

Here is where gratitude and thankfulness play a huge role, these thoughts automatically trigger a different neurological pattern that is more associated with calmness and wellness.  So give it a try, next time you notice yourself stressing…accept and acknowledge, identify and segue, and replace and run healthy thoughts through your mind so you can positively influence and affect your brain for the better!

WHAT ABOUT TURKEY, IS IT BRAIN FOOD?

Ever wonder why you feel tired after eating turkey on Thanksgiving? The popular answer is that turkey contains a lot of Tryptophan, right?  Well, this is only partially true.

Tryptophan is an amino acid converted by the brain to 5-HTP, then to Serotonin, which in turn is converted into Melatonin.  This is great because it assists sleep, clearly plays a role in balancing mood and sleep patterns and has also shown benefits for a variety of disorders, including anxiety, obsessive-compulsive disorder, migraine headaches, back pain, weight loss and sleep disturbances.

But you can’t blame your Thanksgiving drowsiness solely on Turkey.  The high load of heavy carbohydrates that go along with the turkey is also to blame. The key here, is to eat the other foods that are even higher in Tryptophan like Tofu, Black and English Walnuts, Almonds, Sesame Seeds, Roasted Pumpkin Seeds, and Gluten flour.  These are going to give you more of what you really want from the meal (a nice healthy nights rest) and less of what you don’t want (a gut-busting Thanksgiving hangover!).

Surprisingly the best source of Tryptophan is in a 5-HTP supplement. Why?

Well, Tryptophan needs a transport molecule to pass the blood brain barrier. Whole foods contain other amino acids besides Tryptophan and so compete for the transport molecule, so very little of the Tryptophan is able to get through to the brain.  So if you’re looking to increase your amount of tryptophan than a nice 5-HTP supplement may be in order.

So, this Thanksgiving try being grateful in thoughts as well as in action and words and eat less of the carbs and more of the things that are going to help your brain stay nice and healthy.

Neurofeedback Autism Research

Now Solutions to the ADD, ADHD & Autism Brain Problem…

There are now five types of effective recognized professional treatments for ADD, ADHD, and Autism:
1. Drug treatments: (Ritalin, Adderall, Concerta, Strattera, etc). Most of these drugs contain methylphenidate, the same ingredient as “speed” on the street where it’s highly illegal, and addictive to many. They do help education authorities to “control” a child while at school. Some schools even get a subsidy for every Ritalin user. PERHAPS a conflict of interest – YOU THINK? This type of “medication” does NOT “cure” anything. Suppressing symptoms can also suppress potential. In addition, there are many drug side effects and addictions as serious drawbacks to using Ritalin and similar drugs. You can check on these facts if you aren’t convinced about these dangers at:
http://ADHD-biofeedback.com/ritalin.html
2. Allergy treatments. For several years, I worked with another researcher developing End-Point-Titration in a Florida allergy clinic. In my opinion, EPT is the only truly effective method of allergy/sensitivity cure therapy. During that time, (EEG biofeedback was not known to me then), I used this technique along with others to successfully treat ADD/ADHD in several children. However, this EPT therapy is usually very expensive, ranging up to $10,000 in expensive “doctor” time to diagnose and treat.
3, Nutritional treatments. Many “cures” have been seen by taking some allergens out of the diet, supplying enzymes and probiotics to diets, etc. This might be considered as an addition to the allergy treatments above.
4. EEG Biofeedback training. Starting in the 70′s, more and more clinicians have found that training to raise the SMR brain wave while controlling or lowering Theta works to alleviate or remove those symptoms of attention and concentration deficit, impulsive and hyperactive behavior, autism, epilepsy, and even depression and schizophrenia symptoms. The same drawback of very high cost is here as well, as this training in a clinic also requires hours and hours of expensive clinic/doctor time. Typical costs for 60 half-hour-training sessions for ADD/ADHD/autism run from $3000 to $10,000. Leasing from BHT Inc can cut this cost to under $450 in most cases.
5. Passive Auditory brainwave Training. Since April 2004, Dr Bate has conducted successful experiments in substituting passive auditory messaging for the expensive EEG biofeedback (and computer). The success rate is very comparable to that of EEG biofeedback (above). In the experiments Dr Bate found that this “Brain Training” might take as long as two to three months, but this is also the case with EEG biofeedback (Neurofeedback). There’s no such thing as an instant “cure” with either. Both take some time as they are both actually changing the amplitude of brain waves.
EEG Biofeedback (AKA neurofeedback) has been in use since the 1970s. It is completely safe (so safe that no state in the US evens requires a license). Many research and personal reports show that well over 500,000 diagnosed ADD/ADHD persons have been “trained” out of these brain disorders with it. These kids sit quietly in class and learn, and in most cases, their measured IQ goes up.
The data from dozens of clinicians, and thousands of ADD/ADHD subject’s shows with 40 half-hour sessions, approximately 50% of ADD/ADHD trainees lose all the “brain problem” symptoms. With 60 half-hour sessions, or 60 nights of auditory brainwave Training, approximately 85% of ADD/ADHD trainees lose most or all of these “brain problem” symptoms. “Success” in this training is considered to be the trainee sitting still in class, paying attention, learning easily, doing assigned homework in the time allotted, and in many cases, an increase in tested IQ. Needless to say, getting off all dangerous drugs is also an important criterion.
What about the “other” 15%? Well, remember that ADD/ADHD is NOT a disease. It’s more like a broad “continuum” ranging from the boy who eats candy at lunch, and is hyper for the afternoon all the way up to non-communicating autism. Also remember that diagnosis of ADD, ADHD, and Autism is more art than science, and is done more for insurance than for therapy. Diagnosis and separation of ADD-Autism symptoms is a “guess” at best, and different doctors misdiagnose many children.
Another very important success factor is “motivation” of the trainee. Some clinicians are not as good at this as others. This also applies to parents and teachers. The advantage of the Bate Auditory Training system is that no motivation is required. Just let it run 24/7.
Each child is an individual, and different in many ways. Those children that are closer on the continuum to Autism are the ones that mostly compose this 15%. These children take more sessions (up to 200 in one case reported by Dr Von Hilsheimer, an internationally recognized clinical expert), but even these more serious cases are trainable with EEG biofeedback or Bate Auditory Training. Since the cost is always a factor, the first choice should be the BAT system, as it is a small fraction of the other costs

Brainwave Entrainment Brain

brainwave entrainment brain
brain entrainment audio?

hi. I’ve been looking into audio for so called brain entrainment, and they sell it online for alot of money, but won’t provide many details. They claim it can be a cure for just about every psychological ill. First of all,… does this stuff work at all, for anyone?

secondly.. as far as I can tell the basic theory is to create a frequency difference , between 5 and 15 hz or so, between the same signal presented to each ear separately ( ie in stereo headphones )… as these frequencies are supposed to match brainwave frequencies.. of deep meditative states. But,…. frequency is a logorightmic scale. So a frequency difference of very low tones, such as oh, 110 hz say, would be maybe a bit noticeable…. , but a small 10 hz frequency difference of high tones , oh, say 1600 hz even, … would not be noticealbe at all ( would be a much smaller interval musically speaking ).. so what’s up with this? And they won’t tell me anything.

If you are referring to the Holosync program, they have a free trial audio CD. It is good for relaxation. I’ve only done the beginner’s level and have become a calmer person. I don’t “sweat as much of the small stuff” as I used to. Also, the Holosync people have free email and phone counselors for anything that may “come up” during the process. (Feelings, memories, etc.) I don’t know that I’ll do the whole 12 levels, but this first one was worth the money to me.
